Green Design

Designing “green” continues to grow in design occupations and popularity.

When designers say they want to “design green”, it’s possible they may not be talking about a paint color or a furniture finish. Designing “green” has more meaning to it than you think. Let’s break down why it’s so important.

“Green” design refers to designing with the intention of minimizing our impact on the environment. This can be as simple as using sustainable materials, utilizing appliances that are energy efficient, and introducing renewable energy resources. Any building type can use green building strategies, including office spaces, retail stores, hotels, restaurants, and so much more.

A few green building technological strategies we may be more aware of include solar panels, wind turbines, LED lighting, and recycled materials. However, taking the extra step can make an even bigger impact. Several different green building institutes incorporate green standards directly into the architecture of a structure.

Two amazing green building standards are demonstrated through Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and WELL. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of a building’s commitment to environmental sustainability. WELL certification shows a building’s commitment to the occupants that reside there, focusing on both physical and mental aspects of human health. Each of these standards is equally important. Any building can be certified by both standards.

Designers can become “green” advocates by going through extensive training processes, followed by an exam and continuing education credentials. Those that pursue this path are considered experts in the field of green design and earn the titles “LEED Accredited Professional” and/or “WELL Accredited Professional”, among other accreditations from other institutions. Just as building structures can adorn certifications from both institutions, designers can hold both titles as well.

What are some of the challenges of designing with sustainability in mind? Cost can be a huge factor. Unfortunately, green design can increase building expenses due to the lengths of ensuring sustainable methods are being used. It can also be challenging to find materials and products that meet necessary criteria for green building standards.

Despite there being obstacles in designing sustainably, the pros far outweigh the cons. Durability, longevity, efficiency, and eco-friendliness are by far the best qualities about designing with green in mind.

Anybody can become a green design advocate. Those who are passionate about it use it proudly in their work and diligently work it into their design decisions. How will you incorporate “green” into your everyday life?
